quiet rainbow

Hello, and happy first day of December!
I realized recently that I never shared this project with you-- it's the shawl I knit from one of my early handspun yarns, a ply of gray alpaca/merino blend and a ply of a bunch of different colors and wools from Into the Whirled.

This was actually my first shawl-- the pattern is Lala's Simple Shawl.  I think it's a great pattern for a first shawl-- it's simple, but not boring to knit, and it helped me quickly understand the structure of a triangular shawl.  It's really cozy, too!

I called this my Quiet Rainbow shawl because it has a lot of colors, but the ply of gray mutes them and keeps the shawl from being too loud.  It's big and snuggly.  (In case you're wondering, that's why I tend to take shawl pictures that have my feet in the frame-- it gives a reference for the size of the shawl.)

I hope you're having a great weekend!

  1. I find the fact that you take shawl photos with your feet in them adorable, also I want those flats they are so super cute! I'm also a huge fan of Into the Whirled, I actually got to meet her once, she is such a sweetie. That shawl is very "you" too, if that makes any sense, I think that hand knit objects from hand spun yarn always capture a bit of the artist.

    1. Ohhhh, Pumpkin, you are so sweet! I'm so glad you like the feet-in-the-photo photo! :D (p.s. those flats are like fifteen dollars at Payless. I walk everywhere, so I never buy expensive ballet flats.) Into the Whirled is so fantastic! She just updated her shop for the first time in a while (I think she was doing lots of fiber festivals) and I think I just scrolled through and pawed at my screen and whined, "But it's so pretty!!!" And thank you so much for saying that about the shawl-- it's funny you should mention that it's very 'me.' As I was knitting it, it reminded me a lot of introverted people, in that the colors maybe aren't as obvious at first glance-- but they're certainly still present, and just as bright. :)

      Have a wonderful day!

  2. I love the colours on this, looks gorgeous.

A shawl is one of my "to knit" things, it seems pretty mandatory if you knit haha.

    1. Thank you so much! It's so warm, too-- I never saw myself as someone who would wear a shawl, and now I love knitting them! I wear them like scarves, rather than around my shoulders, because if it's chilly my shoulders are already covered up. But I totally know what you mean about them seeming mandatory to knit! I felt like once I made my first shawl, I was a 'serious knitter' whatever that means. :P

  4. Such a perfect pattern choice for handspun. It shows it off wonderfully while there's still interest in the shawl itself. Great job!

    1. Aw, Grace, thank you! I was afraid if I plied the colorful single together with itself, it would just get a bit muddied, so I wanted to give it a color to both blend with a pop against. And since the gray is an alpaca/merino blend, it is soooo soft. Heehee, thank you for the shoe compliment, too!
